YOU DON’T NEED ALL THIS GEAR TO GO OVERLANDING
Start with what you have. Add gear when experience tells you what you need.
It's easy to look at a fully built overlanding rig and think you need thousands of dollars in equipment before you can get started. The truth is, you don't.
A vehicle loaded with accessories, rooftop tents, refrigerators, drawers, and recovery equipment might look impressive, but none of that is required to begin exploring. The best way to build your setup is to get out there, gain experience, and learn what works for you.
Start simple. Get out there. Learn. Then build.
1. What You Actually Need
At its core, getting started with overlanding is pretty simple. You need:
A reliable vehicle appropriate for your destination and planned route
Enough fuel, food, and water for your trip
Basic shelter and sleeping gear
A reliable way to navigate
Basic tools and recovery equipment appropriate for your vehicle and the terrain
That could mean a stock SUV, a ground tent, a sleeping bag, a cooler, and a few storage totes in the back.
That counts as overlanding. You don't need a heavily modified vehicle to start exploring.
2. Gear Should Solve Problems
Specialized gear can make camping and traveling more convenient, but convenience isn't the same as necessity.
A refrigerator is convenient, but a cooler works.
A rooftop tent is convenient, but a ground tent works.
Built-in drawers improve organization, but plastic totes work.
A dedicated water system is useful, but water jugs work.
An awning provides quick shelter, but a tarp can do the job.
Instead of asking, "What gear should an overlander own?" ask yourself, "What problem am I trying to solve?"
Use what you already own until your experience gives you a good reason to upgrade.
3. Build Your Setup Around Your Trips
There is no single right way to set up an overlanding vehicle. Your equipment should reflect where you travel, how long you stay, and who comes along.
Weekend trips close to home: Keep things simple and carry what you need.
Long-distance or remote travel: Plan for additional fuel, supplies, communications, and self-sufficiency.
Solo adventures: Consider your personal needs, recovery options, and emergency plans.
Family adventures: Plan for additional sleeping space, food, water, and comfort.
Different vehicles: A Jeep, SUV, and full-size truck each have different cargo capacities, limitations, and capabilities.
Every trip teaches you something. You'll discover what you forgot, what you never used, what was inconvenient, and what could make your next adventure better.
That's when you start considering new gear—not because someone else says you need it, but because you've discovered a real need.
4. Learn as You Go
Overlanding is about more than equipment. It's about exploration, preparation, self-reliance, and the experiences you share along the way.
Learn how to use your navigation tools. Understand your vehicle's capabilities and limitations. Prepare for changing weather, respect the places you visit, and leave the trails and campsites better than you found them.
You don't have to know everything before your first trip. Start with manageable adventures, learn from others, and build your skills as your confidence grows.
Start Simple. Get Out There. Learn. Then Build.
Don't let someone else's $20,000 gear list convince you that you need $20,000 worth of equipment before you can have a great adventure.
Your first trip doesn't have to be elaborate, expensive, or far from home. It just has to be a starting point.
At Beyond Borders Overland, we believe overlanding should be accessible to people who share a passion for adventure, community, and responsible exploration. Whether you're driving a stock SUV or a fully equipped Jeep, there's always something new to learn and somewhere new to explore.
You don't need all the gear. You just need the willingness to go.
Get out there. The journey starts now.
